Bestowing Beauty: Masterpieces from Persian Lands
Apr. 23, 2022 — Jul. 17, 2022 | Levis Gallery

Celebrating the rich artistic and cultural heritage of Persian civilization, Bestowing Beauty: Masterpieces from Persian Lands features over 100 works from the sixth to the nineteenth century drawn from the preeminent Persian art collection of Hossein Afshar. Persia refers to the historic lands in southwestern Asia where the Persian culture and language flourished—a region now associated with the Islamic Republic of Iran, but previously extending beyond its modern-day borders.

Through the collector’s eyes, we see a portrait of Iran that manifests a strong sense of identity reflected and affirmed by the visual arts, as well as an artistic sensibility that has permeated across time, space, and medium. The exhibition showcases textiles, manuscripts, ceramics, paintings, metalwork, scientific instruments, woodwork, and jeweled objects.

Highlights include exquisite miniature paintings from the Shahnama (Book of Kings), the Persian national epic; an array of historically significant ceramics; rare Qur’an leaves; and a monumental silk carpet from the height of Safavid carpet production.

Bestowing Beauty represents a dedication to preserving Iranian artistic heritage for future generations and a desire to make it accessible for study and enjoyment. Woven throughout the tales of these extraordinary artworks are experiences, ideas, and emotions shared by all peoples. By evoking universal themes of faith and piety, love and longing, kingship and authority, banquets and battles, and earth and nature, the exhibition brings alive the rich heritage and enduring beauty of Persian art.

The artworks also explore the role and fascinating history of trade, migration, and cultural exchange in the development of Persian art, demonstrating its important legacy in artistic and technological advancement within Islamic lands and beyond.

Bestowing Beauty: Masterpieces from Persian Lands is organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. It is sponsored locally by season sponsor ProMedica and presenting sponsors Susan and Tom Palmer, with additional support from Taylor Cadillac, KeyBank, the Aaron Family, the Ohio Arts Council, Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP, and TMA Ambassadors.

                                                    A Message From Our President

It was a great time last night at Arlyn’s Good Beer. Perfect weather, great music, meeting new people, enjoying good beers and snacks that you so generously provided.  Thanks to Jo Ascunce for arranging and all who participated.

Jo received this note from Akiko Jones (her husband Eric is one of the owners of Arlyn’s):

Dear Jo and the University Women Board Members:

Thank you so much for holding such a great gathering for us.  It was such a fun time.  It was really nice to see a lot of members whom I had not seen for a long time.  Thank you also for holding it at the Arlyn’s. I hope the members like the place;  the weather also really helped us.   Thank you for having the band and the snacks for us, too.
Enjoying the beautiful weather

Rachel Leatherman is a senior who lives in Continental.  Her major is Inclusive Early Childhood education.

She wrote that she "would like to become an early childhood teacher, preferably in the Preschool or Kindergarten settings. The reason that I chose the career path is because of my experience as the lead Preschool teacher at a Child Development Center in East Texas. Almost all of my students were faced with hunger and abuse in their home lives. As an unskilled leader in their lives, I felt that I was not making as big of an impact as if I had more training. Throughout the course of my education, I feel that I am becoming the educator that I would have liked to have as a child, and the person that my past students needed. I feel as though I would be a great professional educator because of my creativity, and hands-on initiative. I have a very high energetic personality that is able to meet the needs of the students. This year’s field placement has given me the opportunity to interact and support children with a wide range of abilities in their lessons and activities."

Rachel is president of Kappa Delta Pi, a National Honor Society for Educators. She is employed as a grocery clerk at Kroger.

at Sanchez's ~2018

The 2018 University Women Fall Brunch was held Saturday, Aug. 25 at the Simpson Building at Simpson Garden Park.  All who attended enjoyed delicious food, shared information about the upcoming year of interest group activities, were well informed of what's happening at BGSU by President Rodney Rogers, and were well entertained by the wit and humor of Mr. Tom Walton.
Our fine scholarship recipients, Bonnie Bailey and Courtney Hunt gave very gracious thanks as they spoke about their aspirations as non-traditional female students at BGSU.  And our wonderful raffle and silent auction was a rousing success!
Thank you to all who made this annual event such a success!
