Our President’s Message:
I'm so excited to serve as this year’s president for the University Women of BGSU. I have been part of this organization for a long time and I am extremely fortunate to have so many talented and creative women on the board that will make my job easy. I am very humbled and honored to be asked to serve in this capacity.
As you all know, the Elder-Beerman Community Day sale was extremely lucrative and was our major fundraiser for 2017. University Women raised enough funds last year which allowed us to award two $2000.00 scholarships. Fortunately, UW held a Secret Garden Tour on June 23rd which was very successful. We earned about $1900.00 in ticket sales which will allow us to award one $2000.00 scholarship. The Garden Tour attendees were treated to a wonderful display of flowers, yard art, and water features. The homes that were featured were Alice and John Calderonello, Royce (Linda) Parker, Denise Robins, Marie Rogers, Dinah Vincent and Karen Seeliger. A special thanks go out to Jo Ascunce and Phyllis Hartwell for all the arrangements and hard work to make this a successful event.
At the board meeting, we talked about other fundraising ideas but after much discussion, it was decided not to go that route. One suggestion that we talked about was raising the membership dues from $10 to $20 and after much consideration and discussion, a motion was made to raise the dues which was agreed to by all board members. Reviewing past historical data our dues has been $10 since 1994! I believe that UW fosters friendships, provides community service and most important, awards scholarships to nontraditional women students. Raising the membership fees to $20 is much more preferable than searching for another fundraising activity.
The membership application is available for you to download below if you would like to complete it in advance.
Also at our last board meeting, Barbara Sanchez (nominating chair) indicated that we needed a Vice President for 2019. I am happy to announce that Jane Schimpf has agreed to fill that role.
The annual fall brunch will be held on August 25th, at 10 a.m. at the Simpson Building at Simpson Garden Club. Bring a dish to share and any guests you would like to invite. As in past years, we will also have a raffle and silent auction so if you have items to donate, please bring them to the event. Barbara O’Brien will be in charge of the raffle, and if you have questions, you can contact her at email@example.com or telephone her at 419-352-0754. Tickets for the raffle will be sold so don’t forget to bring some cash. All proceeds will go into the scholarship fund.
The brunch program will start with opening remarks from BGSU President Dr. Rodney Rogers who will give us an update on activities and events at BGSU.
Mary Lynn Pozniak will announce our scholarship winners for 2018.
Our featured guest speaker is Tom Walton who is a retired Editor and VP of the Toledo Blade who will entertain us with his wit and humor. He continues to write a humor commentary column for the paper and also produces a weekly radio commentary for WGTE public radio called “Life as We Know It”. He will offer warm and unique insights into the world around us.
Ann Bullerjahn, chair of the Community Service Committee is working with the Salvation Army to collect school supplies for Wood County students through July 31st as noted in a previous post. If you are going to participate in this event, you can drop off those schools supplies at either Ground for Thought or Susan Winters, 328 W. Wooster Street.
Roger and Barbara Sanchez will host the holiday party on December 14th in their beautiful home at 720 Brittany. Additional information will be forthcoming in the next newsletter, so mark your calendar now with the date.
The Executive Board reviewed the University Women of BGSU bylaws that were adopted in August, 2015 and are proposing substantive changes to the bylaws. You can review the August 2015 bylaws that are posted on the web site at https://www.weebly.com/editor/main.php#/ The proposed changes are attached and will be voted on at the banquet.
Hope to see everyone at the brunch.
