Our President’s Message:
Dear University Women,
As the daffodils nod on their stems and the birds sing a morning chorus, my year as president of the University Women of BGSU is drawing to a close. This is the largest and, in my opinion, most diverse and interesting organization in Bowling Green. And that’s saying something.
I was pleasantly surprised when I moved here from San Diego about a decade and a half ago by how vibrant and interesting Bowling Green is. That’s because of the university and because of the many community organizations.
The University Women of BGSU is the best of both. Our organization supports a diversity of interests, while fostering a sense of community and embracing newcomers. No wonder it’s the largest club in town.
Club activities this past year were a mix of tradition and innovation. The list of interest groups grew to sixteen with the addition of the Movie Group and the TOOTs (The Out of Tuners) singing group. Events included the downtown planting, the bus trip, the fall brunch, and the holiday party.
Although we don’t consider ourselves a service club, we have indeed made our community a better place. We awarded two generous scholarships to non-traditional female students at BGSU, funded mostly by our participation in the Elder Beerman Community Days Sale, and we were able to make another deposit into our scholarship endowment fund at the BGSU Foundation. During the holidays, members donated to help provide gifts and food for 8 local families.
The downtown planting is coming up again very soon and, as you will read elsewhere in this newsletter, plans are well underway for a garden tour this summer.
I will always treasure the friends I have made in this organization and look forward to many more years of membership. As for my presidential year, it was a treat. The Executive Board Members are an impressively capable—and diverse—group of women who take care of business without making a fuss about it.
Suzanne Fahrer, your incoming president, is one of those creative and capable women. She will do a wonderful job leading our community of friendship, family, and fun! My best wishes to her, and you, for the coming year.
